What is human trafficking?
Human trafficking means selling human beings against their will. It is a modern version of slavery. The people who do this are called human traffickers. They promise people a job and a better life, but it’s a lie. They are sold instead. Traffickers usually take advantage of poor people and those who can’t get food, housing, or healthcare from the government.
What is the T-Visa?
The T-Visa is a non-immigrant visa. That means it is for a specific period of time. The T-Visa is for victims of human trafficking. It gives the victims protection and allows them to stay in the U.S. to help catch and punish human traffickers.
Requirements for a T-Visa
There are some things that need to be true to get a T-Visa:
- You are or were a human trafficking victim.
- You are brought to a port of entry by the human traffickers. Or, you may already be in the U.S., the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Soma because of the traffickers.
- If you’re at least 18 years old, you must do what you can to help law enforcement officers catch and punish human traffickers. If your body or mind is too badly injured to help, you usually won’t have to.
- You’re able to show that returning to your home country would be extremely dangerous.
- You are considered admissible to the U.S. If not, you can apply for a waiver.
